About

What is the Metaverse? There are many definitions and a lot of marketing hype surrounding the “Metaverse”. The IEEE Metaverse Initiative recognizes that the boundaries between the physical world and the cyber world are fading, and that we are moving toward a unified perception of these merged worlds.

We experience digital transformation today in our daily professional and personal activities, in arts, entertainment, and gaming. Digital twins are changing industry operations. Over the next decade, we envision the Metaverse becoming an integral part of our professional and personal experiences and deeply influencing the industrial sectors.

There are obstacles to overcome on the path toward the Metaverse, including technology limitations and economic hurdles. Standards and open data are crucial for the success of the Metaverse. There are challenges posed by different regulatory frameworks, cultures, and values.

The IEEE Metaverse Initiative is committed to fostering technology exchange and global awareness of both the benefits and risks of the Metaverse. We encourage open collaboration, and sharing of results, and embrace contributions from all sources. Our ultimate goal is to reap the full potential of the digital world and create a Metaverse that is accessible, inclusive, and transformative for all.
