IEEE Metaverse Initiative and IEEE Computer Society’s Involvement in Metaverse
August 2024 | Virtual Event
The IEEE Metaverse Initiative recognized that the boundaries between the physical world and the cyber world are fading.
First, Cecilia Metra and Ming Li provided an overview of the objectives and latest activities of the initiative, then, they discussed how to systematically address the issues of standardization in this niche area.
This event was moderated by Dr. Edward Au, 2024 Vice President for Standards Activities of the IEEE Computer Society
Featured Speakers:
- Ming Li, IEEE Computer Society Metaverse Working Group
- Cecilia Metra, 2024 IEEE Division VIII Director-Elect
IEEE Future Tech Forum: User Adoption of the Metaverse Roundtable
3 April 2024 | Virtual Event
This complimentary live, special 60-minute event was held virtually on 3 April 2024. During the event, Tom Coughlin, President, Coughlin Associates; 2024 IEEE President, served as the moderator, and was joined by a panel of subject matter experts.
For this event, we used FrameVR, a browser-based virtual environment, and Zoom.
Though there is no single definition and vision for the Metaverse, there is a general realization that the boundaries between the physical world and the cyber world are fading and that we are moving toward a unified perception of these merged worlds.

Will Our Cities Morph into a CityVerse?
The digital transformation of cities, led by the need to optimize resources and offer better services to citizens, is resulting in a habitual use of digital resources and digital space. Citizens, on their side, are getting more and more used to operating in a digital space for their shopping, inquiries, social interactions, and more.
These two trends, one pursued top-down by city municipalities, and the other bottom-up by citizens, are converging towards the transformation of our cities’ living space towards what we may call a CityVerse.
The webinar addressed these two trends, bringing concrete examples in the first part. In the second part, it addressed the issue of how life could be in this new environment, and how people’s social relations might adapt and contribute to shape it. The third and closing part addressed the need to steer this evolution through standards that also foster increasing sustainability of the cityscape.
Industrial Metaverse
In this webinar, Roberto Saracco discusses the industrial metaverse. Although lesser known than the consumer metaverse, the industrial metaverse is actually generating more revenue and is expected to grow to over $100B by 2030. It is also expected to adopt more advanced technologies that may not be affordable in the consumer metaverse for some time.
